Day 140
Maine kicked our ass this morning. It was 50 degrees, windy, and very rainy. We were planning to go all the way to Grafton Notch today, which meant going through the Mahoosuc Notch and the Arm which people say are the hardest miles on trail.
The Mahoosuc Notch is .8 miles that typically takes hikers 2-3 hours to get through. We had 6 miles before that today and needed to get to Bethel Maine for our motel reservation and resupply.
Unfortunately, the first 6 miles of the day with the weather conditions were miserable. We all hiked relatively together today. Whoever was in front was constantly stopping to make sure we made it through all right. The steep rock slab ascents and descents were brutal and very slow. We were barely getting a mile an hour.
After a few miles we decided to change our schedule and bail out into town early. We didn't feel it was safe to try to continue in the wet conditions. We took a back trail down to a dirt road and had one of Nick's hometown friend's dad pick us up. He has a camp nearby and was gracious enough to grab us. His son is currently hiking the Continental Divide Trail.
He drove us to the the motel which was slightly out of town, then to Hannafords. We said our goodbyes, and resupplied, got some dinner, caught the end of the World Cup, then hitched a ride back to the Motel.
We were very thankful for to get off trail, and still make our reservation. Tomorrow we will tackle the Mahoosuc Notch and Arm.
Happy Trails 🌲
