Mama K!

We woke up early for our hike today and got some Mcdonalds breakfast sandwiches courtesy of Fancy Feet's wife who also brought donuts and OJ too!  We hiked the Hunt Trail up, which was 5.2 miles to the peak. There were some pretty technical boulder scrambling but nothing that we haven't seen before. Heading up we could also tell it was going to be a perfect day to summit. 70s, sunny and almost no wind.  We all started to hike together so we could all finish together. There was a large crowd of people at the sign, mainly dayhikers and they all started to cheer when we got close.  There were probably close to 20 thru-hikers who finished today. We had our summit beers and spent a few hours up at the top since it was so beautiful out It was a perfect d...

Baxter State Park, the Birches

I was very close to not getting a spot in the final campsite. I showed up at exactly 7:00am when registration opens and I was the 12th and final person.  We hiked 4 miles to the ranger station early this morning and now we only have 5 miles up a blue blaze to our site. We hung out down by Abol Bridge where they have a small store/resupply with food and beer.  There was a large group of thru-hikers loitering around and hanging out which was fun. We know everybody who we will be summiting with.  We grabbed just enough beer and food to make it up Katahdin tomorrow and walked to camp. It was an easy 5 miles, and we got there by 1:00pm. We spent the rest of the day prepping, hanging out, and reminiscing with all the other hikers.  We went and checked in with the ranger and got out Baxter Tags. I am Nobo hiker 184 to get my tag. I was 182 in Harper's Ferry and 528 at Amicalola.  One hiker named Re...

Our final full day of hiking on the AT. We had 21 miles to get to the Hurd Stream Shelter which is the last shelter before Baxter State Park.  It was gorgeous out today which we really needed because everything I owned was soaking wet. I dried everything out while I was walking and taking breaks.  Mama K in the distance  At the end of the day we got our best look at Katahdin so far. Crazy to be so close to finishing.  Tomorrow we will wake up early and hope we are some of the first 12 into Baxter. We have 4 miles to get to the ranger station. Afterwards we ideally we resupply at the general store, then hike to the campsite where we will sleep in our tents for the last time!  Happy Trails 🌲

Not a great day today, it poured buckets all day. We didn't wake up in the rain, but we were absolutely soaked by the end. It did stop in the late afternoon so we were able to set up tents and get ready, but after dinner it started to pour again.  This was the only picture I took today, in our shelter lunch break. We all thought the shelter tonight would be packed but there wasn't really anybody else at camp tonight. We stayed at the Wadleigh Stream Shelter We have been hiking near two other guys, an 18 year old from Kittery named Dirty Dog and a Canadian named Oakley. I think we all have the same summit plan for mileage. There is a campsite 5 miles from the summit of Katahdin but they only let 12 thru-hikers stay there. We are hoping to be part of the crew there so we have a quick and easy summit.  Happy Trails 🌲

We made a change of plans and lowered our projected mileage. We were going to try for 27 miles today, but decided that was too much and are going around 20 to the Cooper Brook Falls shelter.  It wasn't the greatest weather but we did get our first look at Mama K today.  I also got to meet Greybeard, who was recently featured by the NY Times. He's thruhiking the AT at the age of 91 and is about to beat the record. He held it previously at 88 but was beaten by Nimble Nomad. He only has a few more miles up north and in the Smokies to finish up.  That's Mama K wayyyyy in the distance. Still a long ways away Happy Trails 🌲

Hiccup somehow managed to get us trail magic in the 100 mile wilderness. It really isn't too remote, there are plenty of dirt roads that we pass by. There's a lack of phone service, but plenty of bailout options.  We had 16 miles to hike to the trail magic where her friend had lobster rolls and soda for us! And sandwiches for dinner that we packed out   Early in the morning we hit our last big trail marker of 2100 miles! We also passed a plane wreck from a long time ago. But according to our shuttle driver, both people survived.  We had a few miles to go after camp, and we barely made it to camp in time before it started pouring buckets. Thankfully we got our tents set up before the rain.  Happy Trails 🌲
