Day 77

It was supposed to be in the 80s today so I left camp by 6:40am this morning. We immediately are thrown into what they call "The Rollercoaster". Lots of 500ft climbs and descents over a 14 mile stretch. I was able to get majority of the miles done before 11:00am this morning before the heat really set in.

We also got to mile 1000! Feels great to hit this milestone, very excited to get to the halfway point.

There was an incredible amount of day hikers around us today. There were a few very popular trails that overlap with the AT in this section.

We also hit the West Virginia Border! Our first new state in over a month! We are only here for 7 miles but it's better than nothing.

We're spending the night at the Blackburn Trail Center. They have a cabin for thru-hikers, tent pads, free soda, and a screen porch for hikers. A lot of this is specifically for Thru-hikers, not section hikers. Fern, the caretaker here, welcomes everybody, but will tell section hikers to leave if more thru-hikers show up. We're the only thru-hikers here tonight, but there are some section hikers here as well.

Tomorrow we have 13 miles to Harper's Ferry, where we will get another thru-hiker number, and hit an unofficial halfway mark. Lots of people start their hikes from either direction here. They call it a Flip Flop, where maybe you hike north from Harper's Ferry, get to Maine, then flop back down to Harper's and hike southward. People do that if they want to avoid crowds or unfavorable weather.

Happy Trails 🌲
